HerBusiness

Do you feel like there is a LOT more potential in your business that you just aren’t tapping into?

As women business owners, we are often busy ALL THE TIME. We don’t find time to even think about planning or strategic thinking. We find ourselves slogging away IN the business without much focus at all to working ON the business.

And, while we INTEND to give ourselves every chance to be successful, we are often not doing the ONE THING that could make the big difference to turning our business around.

In this episode, I take you back to a point in time over 20 years ago when I took one specific action that saw me take my business from $300K to over $1 million in under 12 months.

Listen to hear about this simple but powerful act that turned my business around.

In this episode:

  • How taking some time out to think bigger tripled my revenue
  • The critical mindset shift we had to make to go from a six-figure to a seven-figure business
  • How the act of declaring a goal helped shape our future
  • The questions to ask yourself to get more clarity about your future direction
  • And more.

Last month my home was the feature story in Australian House & Garden, the leading home design magazine in the country. Pretty cool, yes?

The house looks fantastic, and the story was ten pages of prime real estate in a magazine with hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Plus, we got some bonus exposure when they decided to do a question, and answer story with me, asking me about my inspirations, HerBusiness, and my design likes and dislikes.

They also included our business name and my personal story, which is publicity that would typically cost $$$$$$$ to buy.

I love my home, and it looked gorgeous in the magazine. I’ve lived there for seven years now. But when we bought it, it was an old warehouse, dilapidated and in need of gutting and rebuilding. We put a lot of love and effort and heart into it and a lot of our vision.

We had a team of people - architects, builders, tradespeople, designers all working with us to help make the final product the mirror of what we imagined our home to look like when finished.

And, every single day, I appreciate my home.

I appreciate the light.

Space.

The location.

The rooms that I love to entertain.

The rooms that I chill out.

We designed each room very deliberately.

And it’s not just really functional for my lifestyle; it’s also impressive to look at.

And the House and Garden publishers loved it.

But, here’s the thing.

There was a WHOLE LOT that was happening behind the scenes that DIDN’T make it into the magazine.

When was the last time you took time away from your usual environment? With COVID having put the brakes on any major travel, many business owners have been working harder than ever without a break.

With so many working from home, it means that you're in the same environment day in, day out. This COULD be stifling your creativity and ability to have breakthrough ideas for your business.

Some of my most productive creative writing, content creation and breakthrough ideas come to me when I spend time away from my desk. I'm often surprised by the bolts of clarity that come to me when I'm on the beach, in the shower, or out running or walking.

Being in a new location is a different experience to moving my laptop, say, from my head office (a brick-and-mortar office) to my home office. Or moving from the dining table to the kitchen bench to work. Working from a whole new environment seems to have my brain functioning in different ways.

I'm writing this as I'm seated at the dining table looking out at sunset through the glass doors that look out to the back of the house that I've rented for 10 days.

And, while today I've had multiple meetings and handled quite a few communications and tasks, my workdays this week will be topped and tailed by a walk on the beach.

It's HEAVEN for me, an inner-city dweller ;-) to walk on the sand and hike on the local trails morning and night. I'm inspired to stay outdoors. And, throughout the day, I find myself giving myself permission to take short breaks.

To sit in the sun with my lunch.

To take 5 mins away from the screen to stare at the ocean or pat the dog.

Only a few days into this break, I started to feel re-energised. I can feel the ideas for my new marketing project brewing... waiting to spill forth when I sit down for a day of planning later this week.

I share this with you to encourage you to find time to take a break away from your routine. Because there is great power in pausing.

Like Thomas Friedman quotes in his book, Thank You for Being Late.

When you press the pause button on a machine, it stops. But, when you press the pause button on human beings, they start. You start to reflect, you start to rethink your assumptions, you start to reimagine what is possible and, most importantly, you start to reconnect with your most deeply held beliefs."

Today I have a VERY special treat for you.

Maybe you’ve noticed...
... membership and subscription businesses are thriving.

Even in the midst of a massive pandemic, companies worldwide are having to shift and adjust to the new economy. And those who have incorporated subscriptions and membership business models are seeing massive growth.

Why? It’s actually quite simple. Because a membership business model establishes predictable and reliable income month after month, regardless of a shaking economy. And right now… who doesn’t need that?!

If you want the blueprint for how to create a membership business of your own, then you’re in the right place. Because my special guest today is membership site expert, Stu Mclaren of the TRIBE Experience.

In this interview, we talk about how you can get clients paying you every single month. When you create a membership inside of your business you create reliable revenue every single month... and the best news is that you can build a successful membership business around what you already, know, love, and do! And you can do it whether you sell products or services... and, whether you have low-cost offers, or high-priced consulting.

I’ve had a membership-based business for over 25 years and I swear by this business model, beyond any other (and I’ve had a few), because it makes for a more predictable income.

Every. Single. Month.

Stu McLaren is well known around the online business industry as the leading membership expert (he’s also been a mentor of mine for the last four years).

I am a big fan of Stu’s because not only is the go-to guy for savvy business owners who want to launch a successful membership… even if they are starting from scratch.

Stu’s strategies and insights are proven and have helped thousands of people — including many of HerBusiness Network members — helping them to jumpstart thriving memberships across thousands of different niches.

As you’ll hear in this interview, the best part of growing a membership is that you don’t need a big email list to achieve success with a membership.

You don’t need to be super-savvy with tech. And you don’t need a huge social media following either. All you need is passion and motivation to serve a specific group of people.

With Stu’s teachings, you can leverage your passion and the experience you already have to create steady and predictable income every month.

“My biggest challenge is finding the time to market and pitch myself outside of paid projects.

I know I need to do it to ensure a consistent pipeline of clients in future, but I can't shake this weird feeling of guilt and worry when I'm not working on tasks that I can't invoice.”

I loved this question from HerBusiness Member, Brittany, because it’s a trap that we can ALL fall into.

We sell something and then we spend time delivering it. And that delivery time can be really intense, especially if you’re a solopreneur.

While you’re busy making "the thing", delivering the training, doing the consultation, presenting the brief, doing the copy-editing, designing the website etc. etc., you have little time to focus on getting new clients.

Clients want their jobs. And they want them now. And there’s just you, doing all the things.

Maybe there’s someone helping you, but the responsibility of delivering the product or service is still squarely on your shoulders.

Meanwhile, the pipeline of potential new clients isn’t being filled and you can find yourself in a cash flow crisis and with lumpy cash flow.

So, how do you move away from good months and bad months to also working on projects that don’t immediately put money in your pocket?

In this episode, I share the three areas that we focus on to ensure that we are at all times attracting, converting AND keeping our ideal clients.
It’s a simple, yet powerful way to think about your business.

If it ever feels like you have too many promotions to focus on and share and market, it might be time to simplify your marketing plan.

What I’ve found is that MORE promotions don’t necessarily lead to better results.

When we analysed our marketing activity, we found that some of our seemingly successful promotions didn’t deliver the RIGHT results.
On the surface, they looked great.

But when we dug in, we could see that they didn’t do the main job they were meant to, which was to sell our Core Offer.

We know that marketing and marketing campaigns take ENERGY and EFFORT. There are landing pages, copywriting, emails, automation, lead boxes, popups, website banner, social media copy and images, printing, internal systems and procedures, scripts and videos and Facebook lives etc.

And more often than not, all the effort doesn’t translate to sales or conversions.

In this episode, I introduce you to the 3-part “Back of the Napkin Marketing Plan”, a simple but effective template that helps you decide which marketing activity to keep and what you can let go of.

Listen to discover:

  • How to create a one-page “Back of the Napkin” marketing plan
  • Which marketing campaign to cut and which to keep
  • Why knowing your Core Offer makes it easier to know how to attract more of your ideal clients.
  • How a Back-End Upsell becomes easy when you focus on aligning your high-end products and services with your Core Offer
  • Why freeing up your time to focus on a few things will give you a greater return on investment

Why is it that some women have a rich ready-made network of people who send them business all the time, while others feel isolated and stuck with nobody to do business with.

I asked hundreds of women business owners what they felt were some of the big stumbling blocks for them getting new clients. And so many of them said they were not getting enough referrals.

They said things like: "People aren't sending people my way."

Referrals make doing business so much easier.

Referrals are free. And, when you use our proven three-part system for getting referrals, it means that there's always someone waiting to do business with you.

Whether you are just starting out in business and looking to establish your client base and decide who your ideal clients are, but you aren't getting a lot of new customers and or referrals…

Or, you've been in business for a while, you've already got great products and services, but you want more people referring you…

This episode gives you a more reliable way to get referrals and repeat business and be matched with the partners, alliances and suppliers...

Listen to hear:

  • How to GET MORE REFERRALS and word-of-mouth clients without attracting tyre-kickers
  • Three things you can do to make connections with people who know, like and trust you and will send you referrals
  • Why being the 'lone ranger' will keep you from building a flow of referrals and what to do if right now you don't have people to refer you
  • How members of the HerBusiness Network are doing thousands of dollars in business simply from being referred by other members
  • Why creating a Connection Network™ is the first thing you want to do to get people referring youListen to see real opportunities to boost your referrals.

Over the years I’ve been asked so many times if I'd mentor and coach women. And, to be honest. With so many women looking for support, it’s just not feasible for me to do that effectively and still serve my high-paying clients.

So, I’ve reserved the high-level input and coaching for the women inside of the HerBusiness Network and in our high-level Marketing Success Mastermind program.

That's until now.

I have decided to spend a week helping as many women as I can on one particular issue that I see over and over again. And, that is the issue of not being sure how to get new clients.

That issue can come done to any one of these reasons:

  • You don’t know where to find clients
  • You’re not convincing people to buy
  • You’re struggling to find your niche
  • You don’t know how to price yourself
  • You have a rollercoaster of good and bad months
  • You have been impacted by the economy or,
  • You have trouble getting yourself out there and talking about your business

I dive into these reasons in episode 170 of this podcast.

Today I want to give you a chance to get coaching from me on how to easily:

  • Always have A WAITLIST OF CLIENTS ready to buy your product or service... even if up until now you haven't been able to FIND the RIGHT PEOPLE
  • Go from always giving away free stuff to CONFIDENTLY asking for the sale and GETTING CLIENTS ON BOARD with your products and services
  • GET MORE REFERRALS and word-of-mouth clients without attracting tyre-kickers
  • Clearly communicate your value, CHARGE THE PRICES YOU'RE WORTH and ask for the sale... even if you don't find it easy to talk about what you do
  • Get in front of more of YOUR IDEAL CLIENTS and know EXACTLY what to say to win the sale... without access to a big social media following or email list
  • TALK ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS in an authentic way that has people know, like and trust you... without ever sounding boring or feel like you're RAMBLING
  • Clarify your message and finally communicate how AWESOME your product or service REALLY is, and have clients really see YOUR point of difference...
  • Consistently get new clients... all WITHOUT SPENDING A LOT OF MONEY and without needing any high-tech equipment or expensive consultants...
  • Create A NETWORK OF REFERRALS and advocates for your business...
  • Develop a steady flow of QUALIFIED PROSPECTS for your business... without attracting tyre-kickers or people who want the free stuff but won't pay you what you're worth
  • FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE and ENGAGED talking about the value you can bring to others... differentiating yourself and clearly communicating what you sell and how you get results for your clients

I’ve put together a new program called the Get New Clients Coaching Week. We have hundreds of women who are joining me and I’d love for you to join me too.

From 8 - 14 March, I’m making myself available to be YOUR coach.

I’ve built so much value into the week. Every day I’ll have a lesson for you AND a couple of steps to take so that you build each day your Connection Network.

A Connection Network is not about networking events or icky networking.

It’s about creating a group of contacts and relationships that lets you get new clients at any time even if you don’t have an email list, you find it hard to explain what you do, or you find yourself backing away from asking for the sale.

So I’ll be giving you coaching. And accountability.

We kick off on Monday, 14 March with Lesson 1: 3 Steps to Getting New Clients

You have a product or a service that you KNOW people need.

But, you're not getting as many sales, and you know you want.

You're settling for fewer clients than you could have.

What's happening?

And, what can you do that will turn the tide and give you a flow of new clients coming your way?

I recently interviewed hundreds of women business owners who were experiencing low sales and noticed seven things they were doing that kept them from reaching their full income potential.

I'll share these insights with you in this episode.

One of these is a TOTAL game-changer.

And the antidote I'll give you works even if you've found yourself backing away from asking for the sale in the past, and you won't need to buy any high-cost technology or training.

When you can overcome these reasons, you give yourself 7 ways to get new clients without feeling salesy…

So, if some days you feel like you're settling for fewer sales than you're meant to have in your business, then what I'm about to share is for you.

Take a listen.

When I work with women to help them grow their businesses and build strong connection networks, Speaking Up is an essential key move I help them to master.

Until we can get some mastery over our ability to speak up, we can fail to meet our true potential in sales, fame, the impact we have and our ultimate success.

It takes speaking up to reach more people, to make more of an impact, and to get more results.

If you want to make a dent in the world, you need to be willing to be seen AND HEARD.

But that can be tough.

Speaking up can make us feel vulnerable.

We worry that someone won’t like us.

Or that we’ll get criticised.

This reluctance to speak impacts most people, but in particular women. Even hugely successful women.

And that’s because a couple of things can happen when we decide to speak up in a more significant way than before.

Say you’re now you wan to do Facebook Lives, or speak on stages, or create a podcast, or run an online challenge and you’re looking to go from where you are NOW to play a BIGGER GAME game.

Firstly, you may feel a case of Imposter Syndrome, that feeling of ‘who do you think you are?’ and that you may get found out as being a fraud.

The second thing that can happen is that what can show up is what author Steven Pressfield calls Resistance, which is that voice that says:

“Stay safe. Stay small. You might get hurt if you reach too high. If you step out and speak up too much, you don’t know what might happen.”

Asking for higher prices, asking for the sale, leaning into opportunities - all that requires you to get past this Resistance and to speak up.

So, what do you do? How do you start Speaking Up more?

In this episode, I share a powerful place to START speaking up more effectively.

Take listen.

I’ll be diving deeper into this topic at the Get New Clients Coaching Week from 8 - 14 March.

We know we need more clients and we need clients coming back and referring us when they've used our services, or visited our eCommerce store, or come into our retail outlet.

Getting new clients starts with Showing Up.

But, SHOWING UP isn't always easy, even for the most outgoing women.

SHOWING UP in a consistent way can be tricky when we have so many competing demands on our time.

But I know from personal experience that to get new clients, reach more people, make connections, and create an audience ready for our offers, it takes showing up.

That's when we are rewarded with more clients, more leads and a network of people who know, like and trust us and refer business to us.

Showing up even if...

  • You're an introvert
  • You're not sure about how to talk about your business without rambling or feeling like you're boring people
  • You don't like your appearance.
  • You don't know that anyone really needs or wants your product or service.
  • Had a really tough time last year and you're still reeling from the experience of lockdown and changes brought on by COVID, and perhaps that experience has you feeling less confident and doubting yourself.

That's where you start to see the rewards.

Sounds simple enough.

But I get it. Showing up isn't easy for me either.

Even though I have a podcast, I do Facebook LIVES, run workshops, run a high-level mastermind, speak on people's webinars, speak on stages at live events, etc. It's still not easy. And as an introvert, I still struggle a little in the day-to-day.

But here is what changed things for me.

  1. Having the RIGHT PLACE to SHOW UP - somewhere where I'd feel comfortable even if I wasn't feeling successful and if I didn't know where to start finding clients or getting the word out about my business
  2. Having an EASY WAY to SHOW UP that felt natural and didn't need me to have it all figured out - with my perfect sales pitch and a pile of business cards ready to hand out to anyone who'd take one.

Listen to hear how showing up brings the rewards of getting more clients, reaching more people and feeling more connected without feeling like you have to be sales or pushy, and even if you're an introvert.

If you’ve been trying to get something done for a while and every time you think about it your eyes roll to the back of your head…

If you can’t seem to sit your butt down long enough to make progress on that project you’ve been meaning to get done…

It’s likely that there is something about the tasks is triggering you emotionally

  • The magnitude of the project has you feeling overwhelmed and bringing up all your issues about not having enough time.
  • It’s something you hate doing (but maybe there’s nobody else to do it, or at least that’s the way it feels).
  • You lack and experience and competence. (Maybe it’s the first time you’re doing this.)
  • Your lack the knowledge and feel a bit stupid because you don’t really know HOW to do a lot of aspects of the project.
  • You don’t know where to start and the right order or things. Or, what to focus on.

Often we have our butt on the chair doing, doing, doing, but we are not specifically focused on the tasks and projects that make the most difference to our business.

We’re tinkering with things that are in our Zone of Incompetence.

Thinkings ‘if it is to be, it’s up to me’.

Or, we’re tinkering with things that SURE, we can do… but they’re not the most effective use of our time and someone else could possibly do them FASTER, and with less HASSLE and ultimately, LESS COST.

And, we tinker with things that we SHOULDN’T be doing at all. Things that are not really moving the needle towards our ultimate goals.

Maybe we’re doing things that NOBODY should be doing, tasks that are not aligned to your goals and objectives and your vision.

So, how do you finally get your butt on the seat and get unstuck and make progress?

Listen to hear how to finally sit your butt down, get past this stuck point and make progress on your most important projects.

Every day I see women in the HerBusiness Network making big leaps in their business.

They’re changing their revenue model.

Launching a new product or service.

Going from being an offline business to an online business.

Or, they’re transitioning from being a solopreneur to growing a team.

Others are bringing on more senior staff and moving out of the day-to-day running of their business.

Some are reaching for a much higher income or revenue than they’ve EVER done before.

Many are growing a big audience on social media or getting their message out there in a big way.

AND, I LOVE SEEING THEIR BIG DREAMS.

I love thinking big and seeing others think big.

When it comes to these big undertakings though - these big leaps, it can feel like we have to take such big steps to get there. But here’s what I’ve noticed in my own business.

The big leaps come from consistently taking small steps.

Running a half-marathon is a series of small strides, less than a metre each, over and over, to get to the finish line. And it’s the SAME when it comes to business.

Big leaps come from taking a series of small steps, over and over again.

From stringing a series of small steps together over a period of time. Not from making big leaps in a single action.

I saw this quote from James Clear (author of Atomic Habits) the other day.

He wrote:

"Just have one good day. Then repeat."
James Clear, author of Atomic Habits

This is so good.

Listen to discover:

  • Why taking small steps helps you make big leaps and avoid missteps
  • How taking one step, again and again, resulted in the one member building a team of 11 therapists running 50 programs over 6 months.
  • The small steps that created Australia’s no. 1 business blog and a runaway success for a membership business owner
  • The Strategic Planning Framework that outlines the small steps to take to get any project done successfully
  • How small steps are the pathway to getting your vision, even if you’re not sure about the steps to take, or you’ve never aimed for such a big goal before

Running a successful business takes energy.

A ton of energy.

So, how do we create more and more of the energy that makes things happen? The energy that has you feeling GOOD as you do what you do each day. The energy that puts you a great mood and builds your confidence.

Loving what you do.

Doing what you love.

Feeling like there’s a good exchange of “give and take” of energy with others around you.

There are some specific things that you can do to bring up your energy and to fill you with life force.

Right now, there are things that you’re doing OR not doing that are likely impacting the enthusiasm and energy that you bring to your business every day.

There are things that you are doing that GIVE you life force and things that DIMINISH life force — energy.

In this episode, I give you the six things you can do right now to create an abundance of the energy you need to make things happen in your business and your life.

Listen to discover:

  • How to reclaim your energy when you feel depleted and ‘wiped out’
  • Why eliminating the naysayers and people who want to see you stay small from your life is a priority that will give you energy
  • The most important energy booster for women business owners who want to create success and results (and it’s nothing to do with facials and day spas)
  • Why ‘aha’ moments are a gateway to feeling more alive and enthusiastic about your business
  • How leaning into your existing abilities and skills will boost your confidence to take bigger risks and try new things in business

You've likely heard the phrase: Proceed with caution.

If you've been in business for any time at all, you've likely made mistakes that have you be more cautious as you think about your next steps.

Maybe you tried to reach a revenue figure in 2020 and missed it by a mile. Or, you hired that person that you were counting on to get you out of the day to day and then they left. Or, you created a new online course and put it to market and then… crickets. Now, you're not as bold about jumping into another big investment (in time and money)

Imagine moving into this year with a different attitude.

Imagine moving into your 2021 with abandon.

How might that change your results this year?

We don't know how the year will pan out and what adventures might come our way. But, we see members of the HerBusiness Network putting in place their 2021 plans - working on their marketing, creating lead magnets, and launching memberships this year.

They are going from being solopreneurs to micropreneurs. That is, they are actively growing a team. They can move forward with their plans with fear and trepidation. Or, they can move into the new year with abandon - without concern.

2020 toughened us up a little, and we know to expect the unexpected. We know who has our back and which communities and groups to rely on to be there for us.

We also know that we may need to be flexible and agile - to take a new direction at a moment's notice to grow or revitalise our business.

So, if you've ever told yourself:

Don't go too fast.
Don't make mistakes.

  • What it means to proceed with abandon
  • How your business is like art

Do you find yourself asking for feedback?

Maybe you’ve had a graphic designer work up a new logo for you.  You have the choice down to a couple of options and you’re not sure which way to go. So, you reach out and ask for feedback.

Or, you’re not sure what to name your new product or service. So you post into a random Facebook group and ask for feedback.

Perhaps you want a set of eyes over your marketing plan to know that you’re on track. And, so, you ask a friend to take a look at it and give you feedback.

Here’s the problem with asking for feedback.

Feedback is often too vague to be helpful.

So, what do you ask for instead? That’s what we are looking at in today’s episode.

Listen to discover:

  • Why asking for feedback can lead to confusion and overwhelm, and what to ask for instead
  • Who ask for advice when you need help in your business
  • The role that experience plays is providing useful input into your business challenges
  • Why more opinions is not better (and what is)
