When I look back on the year 2020 I count my blessings that I live in a country that has been barely impacted by COVID compared to other countries. I live in a country where the political system has been pretty stable. I live in a city where I have been lucky enough to be able to get outdoors and do things I love, like going for a run while my friend and clients in other cities were in lockdown. And thankful for a business that has allowed me to keep doing what I love every single day. Maybe you had some setbacks in your Business. We’ve seen trainers and facilitators who do all their work in-house in corporations left with no work. We’ve had members whose clients are schools have their businesses totally stop. Their schedules cleared. We’ve had therapists with practices, stylists who take people shopping, personal trainers... who have had to stop doing their work. No income. And no online income to fall back on. Inside of the HerBusiness Network, we have supported women to pivot. To finally get an online element to their business. Members have started memberships. Online challenges. Podcasts. And all along the way, they’ve asked for support to get their fledgling projects off the ground That’s what we are designed to do at HerBusiness. To help women take their newborn projects and help them take flight, like a newborn bird that is nurtured until it has strength and ability to fly free. Unfortunately, while many members have flourished, I’ve also seen some women hoping to ride out the changing marketplace - crossing their fingers that things go back to “normal”. I’m going to encourage you to, no matter what things are now looking like - even if they are looking better, that creating a business with recurring revenue, with multiple streams of income, with both online and offline components - means that you have far less stress and fear that things will fall apart because of government legislation or a pandemic. This is what having a sustainable business is all about. And helping women create sustainable businesses is my FAVOURITE thing to do. And this support has helped women have their best year ever. What if working longer hours does not mean working more productively? What if doing more marketing, more promotions doesn’t lead to more dollars in your bank account at the end of the month? What if you could do a whole lot LESS and get MORE results? Morten Hanson is a management professor at the prestigious University of California, Berkeley, and an author of several books. In his book, Great at Work, he argues that you can get more out of doing less, something you will be glad to hear if you have ever felt a twinge of guilt or anxiety about not working seven days a week to grow your business. Or, doing ALL the things. Being on all the social platforms. Trying all the latest marketing tactics. Professor Hansen coined the mantra ‘do less, then obsess’, which suggests that by focusing more on fewer tasks, we achieve better results. What this can translate to for us as business owners are that focusing on fewer things - products and services, times a year that we do promotions, social media platforms that we are a part of... we can actually get better results. It can seem kind of counter-intuitive. But it’s an idea that I’ve been teaching inside of our HerBusiness Network our members are loving it. Listen to discover:

Do you ever feel stuck, trying to make a decision but feeling unsure what you should do next? Maybe you find yourself asking: Should I start a membership? I don’t have a lead magnet. I don’t know what to do to get leads. I don’t know what to focus on. It can be crazy-making. Not only for you but also for those around you to hear you going back and forth, overwhelmed and in a state of indecision. That overthinking and spinning your wheels takes up a lot of your energy but it also impacts others around you. So, what do I do now when I’m stuck in indecision? Anytime I am stuck not sure what to do about a situation I ask this one question. It’s the best question to ask when you don’t know what to do next. Listen to discover:

You’ve been in business for a while. A few years. Or maybe a LOT of years. And yet. there are still areas of business that you still haven’t figured out. Maybe you’re still not making a profit. Or your marketing is still ad hoc. Or, maybe you haven’t managed to keep team members motivated or following procedures and getting their job done just the way you need them to. Or, while you have some systems, they’re not watertight and so mistakes continue to creep in. It can be frustrating. For sure. And, as we are on the horizon of a new year, and we put our plans in place, these small failings, or areas of non-achievement can have us thinking… “Oh no. I can’t believe I still don’t have it together. I’ve been doing this for SO long.” If you can relate, this episode is for you. Listen to discover:

Do you tend to get close to burnout, no matter how organised you try and be around how you spend your time? Maybe you don’t even realise it and that exhaustion gets you by surprise throughout the year. And, maybe you want to have a year that has a little more ease about it in the new year. You want to do lots of interesting projects, but you don’t want to feel the burnout that can come with doing more. If any of that sounds like you, you are in the right place. In this episode, I give you a strategy that has worked well for me and will work even better for me in the new year. And, that is the Clear Week. What is Clear Week? Like it sounds it is a week that I clear in my schedule. It’s not a vacation week. And it’s not me doing ‘nothing’. It is a week clear of the noise of busywork. And, I plan for this week at very specific times of the year. Firstly, right AFTER a big promotion. And, also a few weeks before you dive headlong into a busy period in your business. What to do with your communication when things get tough? That’s what this episode is about. And, we’re doing something a little different. This episode includes highlights from an episode of my other show, Content Sells which I copresent with Marketing Expert Michelle Falzon. This has been a really popular episode and I wanted to share it with you, our HerBusiness podcast listener. Whether it’s a downturn in our industry, the loss of a big client that creates cash flow issues, a personal health crisis or issues with your team. Really, the list is endless of what CAN go wrong! In this episode, Michelle and I answer the question “How do you get going and keep going when a crisis hits or a big challenge forces you to change the way you are operating?” Especially seeing as the tendency can be to isolate and shutdown… but this is the VERY time you need to be connecting and communicating with your audience! Think of something that really matters to you, something that you’re truly passionate about. Are you doing it? Are you living your passion, or do you keep pushing it aside? What if I told you that by embracing your passion, you could positively impact the way you think, the way you feel, the actions that you take and the impact you have on others. Claiming your passion and doing more of what you love will help you live life on your terms and fulfill your dreams - like growing a profitable business. But it does so much more than that. You can turn your passion into purpose, do more good in the world and genuinely make a difference in the lives of other people. Starting and building a sustainable business is a little like art in the making. It's about trying new things, and seeing if they work. And, if they don't, making corrections and continuing on your journey. Artists go through this process time after time — it's how they create art that resonates with us. When we're attracted to a piece of art, it's because it's unique and interesting and says something about the artist and who they are. This idea applies to your business as well. Here’s what I mean. Your ideal clients will resonate with your unique take on your ART, your message, and what YOU bring to the business that is uniquely YOU. So, Is your business a true expression of yourself and your creativity? How can thinking of your business as a work of art help you achieve more success? In this episode of the HerBusiness Podcast, I interview Nicholas Wilton. Nicholas is a renowned artist, entrepreneur and the founder of Art2Life, an online platform that strives to build, empower, and inspire the creative community. Nicholas’s Art2life Workshops, Art2life Creative Mentorship Programs and his Creative Visionary Path online programs provide artistic, business, and creative coaching to artists. Listen to this episode to hear Nichols talk about:
You’ll also come to understand that instead of striving for perfectionism, you can let the journey inspire you by embracing your mistakes, being your authentic self, and making your business more like you. That’s how you’ll draw people in. That’s how you’ll grow your business and achieve your life goals.

Even if you’re surrounded by people who love and care about you, there can still be times when it feels like there’s no-one to turn to. Friends just don’t get it. Your partner, your family, other important people in your life — they may mean well but they can sometimes keep you down by trying to keep you safe. And you can begin to second guess yourself — questioning whether you’re even on the right path. But if you’re lucky enough, you meet others along the way who understand. People who see you and celebrate you. People who speak your language and know the journey you’re on because they’re making it themselves. They’re trusting their ideas. They’re making a difference. These are the people you can go to for much-needed advice or to share a win. To laugh. And it’s your community that will keep you going through good times and bad. It will help you keep the spark alive and build your momentum. And it’s your community that will lift you up and let you know you’re never alone. One of the things that lights me up is seeing members in our community connect and lift each other up in good times and bad. And this year. Well, we’ve all had our fair share of bad. Members have deepened their connections within our community. They've banded together to collaborate and reach higher.

There are things we know how to do well in our business. We had skills before we started our business. And, then we have skills that we've developed over years of practice. The moment we decide to try something new, we are like a beginner. A child learning to play a new instrument. We start to practise - to study, to rehearse our skills. We experiment with new areas of expertise that we want to develop. We have staff and so we practise managing and leading. We run an online marketing campaign so we learn landing pages, copy, calls to action, eCommerce. Often we do MANY campaigns before we see any level of greatness in our results. We want to create a new product or service and so we learn all about offers - and the nuances of designing, pricing, packaging an offer. And then we practise putting our offers out there into the world (yikes)! When we are learning a new instrument, it makes sense that we don't learn just by playing. We learn by practising. And practising some more. And that makes our playing so much better. It’s the same with business. But, so often we don’t give ourselves the gift of practising. Or, let ourselves off the hook by acknowledging that we are still practising, and so we are not performing at our highest level. Yet. Listen to hear:

Sometimes in business, we see our competitor doing something really cool. So, we decide we probably ought to do that thing too. Or, we get some feedback that we really should be doing this, or that, because it’s an opportunity that might lead to great prosperity for our business. Or, we say we’ll do something. Go off the idea. But then feel compelled to follow our original thought so as to stay consistent and not be flaky. All these scenarios can take us off our BIGGER course. Here is how we know if it is not for us. We get the ‘I don’t want to’ feeling. When you think about doing a new thing
We find ourselves digging our heels in - metaphorically - and pushing away from the very thing that we say we want. It can be exhausting. It can be easy to get into a way of thinking that is full of “SHOULDS”. What we SHOULD do or what we COULD do. Yes, you could have a membership You could be doing daily Facebook lives, speaking on stages, writing a book. You could, but you don’t HAVE to. Listen to hear:

What's your relationship like with your business? Does the money side of your business leave you feeling overwhelmed or confused? Do you feel like you're pushing harder and working longer but not seeing the results you'd like? The good news is that making sense of your finances can be fun. The great news is, it's even possible to do less work in your business but make MORE money. Our lives and our businesses are often influenced by what's going on around us, like raising young children, caring for relatives or needing to take better care of ourselves. That's why it's critical to set up a business model that allows you to earn more, without earning more being tied to your time. And when you do this, you'll be able to change your approach to life, and to your business. Because doing LESS is how you can have more of what you want in your life. Kate Northrup, bestselling author of Money: A Love Story and Do Less, teaches women how to have more time and make more money while feeling less stress. According to Kate, the secret to success isn’t fitting more into your day. The secret to success is fitting more of yourself into your day.

Maybe you’ve been running your business for a long time but haven't seen the growth you’d hoped for. And, you have so much experience - more than some of your competitors, but they seem to be making the sales and having all the wins? Or, maybe you’re new in business putting in a whole lot of effort BUT some days, you feel like you are going backwards? Perhaps you want to try something new in your business, like a membership, or an online course, or a podcast, or running webinars - and it feels like you’ve left it too late. Everybody is already doing all that. You don’t want to be an also-ran. You ask yourself… is there any point in playing the game at all? I get it. I have felt that way too. The HerBusiness Podcast has reached 500,000 downloads! Thank YOU for being one of our wonderful listeners. After seeing comments from some of our members who were questioning their own value, I realised that while I see their potential, they were only seeing where they were falling short in business. I’ve done the same thing, many times. Played down my wins. In this episode I explain how owning your awesomeness doesn’t mean you've got it all figured out. It doesn’t mean that you get all your goals, check off all your tasks, win the awards, get the publicity, make the sales. And, it doesn’t mean that you are arrogant or full of yourself when you do celebrate your awesomeness. Every day, I encourage women in our HerBusiness community to - start a podcast, do a Facebook live, hire support in their business, take that leap, go for that bigger job, build that membership. Because so often we don’t recognise that we actually deserve the support or the pat on the back for what we are doing - now. Some of us have decided that we will own our awesomeness when we achieve something BIG we have set out to do. But, certifications, awards, number of staff, annual revenue figures – none of these will make you feel more whole, more smart, more confident, more awesome without you ALSO stepping into ownership of the talents, skills, strengths, experience, and knowledge that any of those achievements and accolades represent. We, each, just need to discover and embrace how spectacular we are and what we ARE achieving as business owners. Listen to this episode to discover:

The HerBusiness Podcast has reached 500,000 downloads! Thank YOU for being one of our wonderful listeners.Hey there. I was inspired to make today's focus Sharpening Your voice after reading Ann Handley's newsletter. Ann is the author of Everybody Writes, a digital marketing pioneer and the Chief Content Officer of MarketingProfs, the leading marketing training company with more than 600,000 subscribers. In her cleverly-named newsletter, Annarchy she was talking about this idea of Sharpening Your Voice. The message was not about saying more, but being more thoughtful about what you do say. Sharper. In this episode of the HerBusiness podcast I talk about not just sharing your voice, but Sharpening Your voice. And there's a big difference. Technology has made it easy for us all to speak, to Tweet, to write, to publish mountains of content, all with a few keystrokes and at the click of a button. Over the last couple of weeks, there has been a lot of turmoil in the world. I've personally received a lot of communications from brands who want to tell me where they stand on the significant issues. Unfortunately, many are sounding same-same and not offering any value or taking a clear stand. I've seen cliches and overused terms that don't really say anything. As marketers, as business owners — our job is to move people towards making a decision, to inspire and to lead people to change. Our voice is the primary vehicle we have to help us to realise those goals. But, the value that is uniquely ours won't be heard if we follow 'groupthink' and use a voice that is the carbon copy of our competitors' voices. Listen to hear:

When we play the comparison game in business, it only leads to frustration and disappointment. So what can you do to stay mentally strong when self-doubt creeps in? Any time we step outside of our comfort zone, we are vulnerable to failure, to criticism, to falling flat on our face. These feelings are made worse when we also start comparing our success and our progress with that of others. We look at someone’s successful sales promotion and maybe we feel bad about our sales. We look at their gazillion followers they have on social media and feel horrible about our small audience. We see them getting opportunity after opportunity and deem ourselves not as good. What’s wrong with me? We might ask. Or, maybe we feel great for them. We are happy to celebrate their success. And while we are celebrating them, we still ask: “Why can’t I have that level of success?” If you’ve felt that way, you’re not alone. Listen to hear:

What’s one thing that people always pick your brain about?Something that you love doing, that you’re really good at and that you just can’t stop helping others with? This is your unique value. It’s the gift, the talent and the knowledge that you can use to make a difference in the lives of others. And, you can turn it into a business that makes money without needing to be pushy or salesy. For so many women, the thought of pursuing sales can be so overwhelming that they don’t make that leap. You don’t ask for the sale, or you bungle the opportunity sometimes undervaluing what you do, or not making a compelling offer. But instead of pursuing sales, what if I told you that you could invite pursuit? You can package up your expertise, the thing you’re really known for, and turn it into a profitable business that you love. Listen to this episode to hear Lisa talk about:

Right now, many business owners are experiencing upheaval in their business. And something interesting is happening to every single one of us. And, that is that the chinks in our armour are showing. These chinks don’t matter too much when times are good. When the money is flowing. When customers are plentiful. When the sun is shining on our business. But, when the economy gets turned around. Or what used to work no longer works. Perhaps we are forced to close the doors on our store. Or we are forced to cancel that live event. Or to stop treating clients face to face. Or to look for new revenue streams. The chinks become gaping holes that leave us feeling very vulnerable. Our Achilles heel becomes exposed. Many business owners who were working from home anyhow, now have the added pressure of not having access to their usual services, or they have kids at home that require homeschooling, partners at home that are also trying to work. In this episode, Suzi Dafnis looks at the chinks that are showing up most commonly and how to take actions towards repairing them and creating new possibilities for you and your business even if right now the future seems unclear. There is one very specific thing that we teach business owners to do that quickly transforms their overwhelm to a feeling of excitement and renewed energy for their business. They get a laser focus and, importantly, they start getting more sales and are able to reach their goals sooner. What is this “wonder-drug” we are giving business owners you might ask? Well, it’s something that’s been around a long time. And it’s something that is definitely not the latest fad. In fact, I think it’s been drastically underrated by most business owners. It starts with not 'winging it’ in business. It starts with actually planning. Now, before you sigh in disappointment (I know, I know, it’s so boring, right!?). Just stay with me for a few moments. Because I PROMISE you, this is the one thing you can be doing right now to get out from under that stressed out, overwhelmed feeling you have around your business and finally start getting rewarded for all your hard work. In this episode, I give you our 3-Part Planning for Business Success model which we have taught our members for years, When we share the planning process, it’s as if the light bulb goes on and the impact is very often profound. We’ve seen people double their incomes, open to new markets, release successful new products and discover lucrative new marketing channels using this process. As a result, over the past few years, these business owners have gone from feeling ambivalent (at best) and downright resistant (at worst), to absolutely LOVING planning. Ready to get planning? It all starts with your vision. Thanks to these members for sharing their business visions (Listen to hear them and create your own vision and plan).

Recently I caught myself waiting for all the little ducks to line up and be in a row before I took action on something I wanted to do. I was letting myself stay stuck because of my inner chatter. I caught myself and got out of my' holding pattern'. Where in life or business do you recognise that you are currently waiting for conditions to be better/perfect before taking the next action? Who or what are YOU waiting for?
Often we can let the excuse that we're waiting on someone else be our excuse for not moving ahead or as a way to procrastinate. When we wait to get all our ducks in a ROW, we can put the breaks on our dreams. In this episode, I tell you how getting to action this one Sunday morning was about making the decisions for ME. I had to stop worrying about what anyone else was doing. This decision made all the difference to my mood. Thanks to these wonderful HerBusiness Network members for letting me share their stories:

We recently completed one of our biggest projects for the year, our annual Business Growth Summit for Women Entrepreneurs, a free online summit that brings together women from all over the world to learn from world-class speakers, bestselling authors and inspiring entrepreneurs. We had 4,500 women register for the summit and the feedback we’ve had has been phenomenal. Members LOVED all these lessons and they’ve started to put these to work in their business. While they all enjoyed the practical advice - many were more impacted by the confidence and understanding they felt when we dove into the inner game topics. In her book Power Attractor, author Gabrielle Bernstein says: In this episode of the HerBusiness podcast I share:
Inspiration Tips from the HerBusiness Network membersWhen we asked members how they bring more inspiration into their lives and here’s what they said... “My morning walks and writing. On the inspiration side of things, quality people, a good (I love biographies) on-going education, podcasts etc. and removing negative people from my life.” “Sitting in a quiet place preferably surrounded by nature with its beauty and sounds. Ironically though a lot of my creative ideas happen at around 3 am, so l need to keep pen & paper next to the bed.” “For me, it’s being visionary, believing is seeing.
Each January for the past 19 years I set a minimum of 1 big goal which is hard to achieve and a few small goals to support it. Every year of achieved it personally or professionally.” "I love a good 'CLEAR OUT' at the end of every year. Cleaning out all papers, old clothes, kids toys, old books - basically anything that doesn't serve me or my family. A lot may go to donations and helps others, otherwise, the rest goes to the tip! For me, it keeps that cycle of giving going as well cleansing. Getting rid of old energy and bringing in the new." “For business, I need to find time to step away - travel - go somewhere else (even the beach for a few hours), but I need to remove myself from the environment to get new ideas, inspiration and allow my 'left brain' to quieten down and my right brain some space to do its thing. Ideally, this works better if I can get away for at least a few days, but on the micro-level just taking a walk through a bush trail or along the beach is also good. I also listen to mindset podcasts while walking to open up some new ways of thinking.” “Alone time, exercise, books, podcasts.” “Crochet! My morning square is my meditative time and some amazing ideas come to me some days while making my square.” “For me as a full-on right-brainer (creative) inspiration comes from everywhere... looking at people, Behance, grocery shopping (looking at the packaging), art galleries, magazines, movie set, fabrics, fashion design etc, everything that is tactile. I get inspiration absolutely everywhere and I store things that I feel interesting, in my brain to use later. I think I’m very conditioned in that way as a creative director because inspiration is the source of every idea you bring to the table. I can spend hooouurrs in a bottle shop looking at all the beautiful labels and packaging... this while I don’t drink a drop of alcohol lol. This image, for example, gives me so much inspiration... the colour, texture, composition, contrast, etc." “Being fully present to whatever I'm doing allows my creativity to flow and lights me up.” “I believe in like attracting like and that surrounding yourself with the energy you want to work with will illuminate your own creativity. Sometimes I, crank up the stereo to Gyuto Monks chanting, it just works! or go to an art gallery, sit with a notepad and take a deep breath and just write, anything. All of it sparks my inspiration.” “For me, it’s reflection, connection and routine. (Maybe these could be my better 3 words for 2020.) Morning rituals of meditation, yoga and healthy breakfast, chunking time for priority tasks, theming the week and setting aside a weekend each month for a solitary retreat all work wonders for me.” “I love my morning practice - meditation - journaling - yoga. That keeps me grounded and inspires clarity. My greatest source of inspiration occurs during learning via podcasts, audiobooks, webinars or reading book books.” “I engage the team with funny gifs and morning messages - and we all chat - which makes us feel connected and ready to go.” Also mentioned in this episode:

Happy new year. For many of us, this is a time of contemplating and deliberately creating the new year. A time for envisioning what we want to do better, differently this year. A time for starting and breaking habits. Each January for a few years, I’ve taken on Chris Brogan‘s invitation to set three words as a focus for the year. Chris Brogan is an American author, journalist, marketing consultant, and speaker about social media marketing I’ve had the pleasure to meet and interview a few times. He has really great books like The Impact Equation, Trust Agents and one of my fave titles - The Freaks Shall Inherit the Earth - Entrepreneurship for Weirdos, Misfits, and World Dominators. A couple of weeks back, Chris did a one-hour webinar where he talked through how to pick your three words, how to incorporate their usage into your day to day planning and execution, and how to use the My 3 Words method for deciding how best to make decisions that closely match your intentions. Chris says this about his process: “Every year, at the beginning of the year, choose 3 words that have personal meaning to you that you will use as guideposts for your chosen path forward in the coming year. Make the words such that they influence your choice of actions, encourage you to decide in favour of your goals, and guide you towards lasting results that you want to experience throughout the year.” So, after a few days of tossing around words that might be a good fit, I came up with my three words.
